Legacy Track of the Week: Future - My Collection

“She told me she was an angel, she fucked two rappers and three singers, she got a few athletes on speed dial, I'm tryna get the case dismissed before I see trial” The coldest diss record of the past week wasn’t actually Remy Ma’s bars for Nicki Minaj (although that’s definitely a savage record and it’s listed below), but instead Future’s intro for his second offering in two weeks titled HNDRXX cuts even deeper, as these subliminals towards Ciara are almost too good to be true… this is lowkey real 🔥🔥🔥 and even though the twitter police will say it’s misogyny (or maybe not cause it's Future and not J Cole and that’s not how fake outrage works???) but that “even if I hit you once, you part of my collection” is 🔥🔥🔥 all the same.

Steve Lacy - Dark Red

“Don't you give me up, please don't give up, honey, I belong, with you, and only you, babyyy” The best record off Steve Lacy’s Demo is definitely Dark Red with its infectious melody and a bridge that might be heaven sent, either way this record transcends all kinds of genres and time periods, and if you love music you need this in your life.

Calvin Harris ft Frank Ocean & Migos - Slide

“Do you slide on all your nights like this? Do you try on all your nights like this?...” Calvin Harris is a Scottish producer and it seems like he’s definitely on the come up with this brand new single under his own name, that has vocals from not only Migos but Frank Ocean??? 👀👀 and yea this is definitely a heater 🔥🔥🔥 the hook is clean and Ocean’s intro pays homage to Pablo Picasso’s Garçon à la Pipe (Boy with a Pipe) - that years ago sold for unprecedented millions - and is another example of why Ocean is one of the legends .

J.I.D. - Never

“Never been shit, never had shit, never knew shit, never out never do shit, damn” Dreamville’s latest artist just released a video for what’s likely the first single off his upcoming debut on the label, and he definitely comes out the gate swingin with a flow that’s unrecognizable from anyone else on the roster. It’s been interesting to see Cole’s latest moves in Atlanta, as he’s stayed away from riding the waves of household names and heavy hitters (Future, Gucci Mane, etc.) yet instead has been collaborating with mostly unknowns (Earth Gang and J.I.D.), once again reiterating why Cole is an original and nothing at all like the rest.

Future ft Rihanna - Selfish

Oh, let's not be alone, empty thoughts fill the room, breathe for me and I'll breathe for you, let's be selfish, selfish, baby” This Rihanna/Future collaboration definitely has redeeming qualities and I’m actually glad it’s not a turn up record… I fux with this for what it is…

Future ft Weeknd - Comin Out Strong

“Like a ***** don't dance, but he make moves, they fuck around, now a ***** gotta shame you, I'm shameless, I be rockin' all my chains too, they told me, ‘boy I think the money's startin' to change you, lord save you, lord save you, member runnin' through the city in the same shoes, now I'm gunnin in the Benz and the Range too, I'm on point, know a ***** never take two” I’m kinda down on The Weeknd since I’ve seen that absolutely abominable Grammys performance with Daft Punk (which is otherwise a great song besides that mockery of a performance), but in fairness Weeknd definitely flexes on this record and Future gets in a few shots at Rocko as well

Future - Fresh Air

“I'ma need fresh air, I'ma need fresh air, I need to get out on my own, It's been too long, girl, I need…” This hook and instrumental is nothing but flames and this is one of the best Future records of all time hands down. Don’t sleep on this record or the MC Pocahontas sample in the intro (to be clear I definitely never heard of MC Pocahontas (link) before but I’m definitely hip now 🔥🔥🔥 Brazil!

Future - Incredible

“In-incredible, in-in-incredible” Produced by Dre Moon this is another one of the best records off the HNDRXX album, a far better project than the self titled album in my humble opinion.

Oddisee ft Toine - NNGE (Never Not Getting Enough)

“I mean what is there to fear, I'm from black America this is just another year, if you're new to disrespect by your elected puppeteers, well let me show you how to persevere” Oddisee flames this revolutionary track off his latest offering titled The Iceberg, which is overall solid underground Hip Hop from front to back. Props for Oddisee doing his own production as well.

Oddisee - Want to Be

“I just want to be happy, I just want to be free, I just want to be left alone, I just want to be me” Another feel good track from The Iceberg that’s definitely worth a listen. Oddisee on the production again as well.

Oddisee - Things

“I want a lot more things, Biggie tried to tell me what a lot more bring, a headstrong man would take a lot more strain, seeing pleasure in the presence of a lot more pain” The single off his latest album is definitely one of it’s strongest records, in which Oddisee paints a picture of humanity’s shallowness and selfishness that puts it all in perspective. One more time for Oddisee on his own production 👏👏👏

Gucci Mane & Nicki Minaj - Make Love

“You see, silly rabbit, to be the queen of rap, you gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques” That record that apparently set it off is this collaboration from Nicki & Gucci that omitting some terrible lines is arguably one of Nicki’s strongest verses in years…

Remy Ma - Shether

“And stop talkin numbers, you signed a 360 deal, through Young Money, through Cash Money, through Republic, which means your money go through five niggas before you touch it, any videos, promotions come out of your budget, endorsements, tour and merchandise, they finger-fuck it, you make, like, 35 cents off of each ducat, I own my masters, bitch, independent, so for every sale I do, you gotta do like ten, stop comparin yourself to Jay, you not like him” She could have rode the Ether beat a lil better but she definitely took the gloves off and right now Nicki & Meek look like they were meant to be together after all. Idk about photoshops and what’s true and what’s not, but right now Nicki’s entire appeal is lookin shaky and if she doesn’t respond this may be the beginning of the end.

Thundercat ft Kendrick Lamar - Walk on By

“From my eyewitness binoculars, to Argentina and Africa, we mastered the pressure” Nvm that Genius has no idea how to annotate this record yet they desperately try all the same, this is standard Kendrick and standard Thundercat… and along with their previous collaborations (Wesley’s Theory and These Walls) this is definitely more heat from where that came from.

Thundercat ft Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins - Show You the Way

“Tell 'em how you feel, Kenny, Kenny Loggins… Ladies and gentlemen, Michael McDonald…” somehow someway the lead single from Thundercat’s new album Drunk has two legitimate features from... Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins??? That’s fire even before you press play, and once you do this record definitely delivers.

Thundercat - Lava Lamp

“Maybe another time and space, when I can look you in the face, far, far away, maybe in another life…” Produced by Sounwave this is one of the smoothest records off the album

Thundercat - Them Changes

"I've been traveling so long, I don't think I can hold on, where were you when I needed you the most?, now I'm sitting here with a black hole in my chest, a heartless, broken mess” Produced by Thundercat and Flying Lotus this definitely a collaboration their fans will enjoy.

Steve Lacy - Ryd

“Speedin' down the backstreet, I'm tryna get you in my backseat, girl I want you to ride with me, baby ride on me” A nice smooth groove from The Internet’s bassist Steve Lacy (who’s credited on J Cole’s ‘Foldin Clothes’) and just released his debut project Steve Lacy’s Demo. This one gets the video treatment along with the previous record mentioned Dark Red.

THEY. - Truth Be Told

“You know, you know… don't say that I didn't warn you… you should... let go… put it all out in the open” THEY. is an R&B duo from Los Angeles comprised of members Dante Jones and Drew Love, and after touring with Bryson Tiller last year they just released their first studio album titled Nü Religion: Hyena, and this is definitely one of the best cuts on the album.

THEY. - All

“Let me in, let it go, for the night, give it all… all… all” Another one of the best records off Nü Religion: Hyena

Taylor Bennett ft Princeton from Mindless Behavior - Intro (The Kid’s Alright)

“Must be why God made me lyrical, this music deeper than spiritual, this the hello, how you feelin flow, this I want it, I could get it though, this an update, this an interview, these the words when they was meant for you” The intro from Taylor Bennett’s Restoration of an American Idol album is kinda decent, and honestly is the big brother that much better than the little brother? Honestly I’m really not sure…

Trey Songz - Playboy

“Don't know why I'm still, still kissing girls that I don't love, still stumbling out of these clubs, still, I'm just so hard to trust, don't know why I'm still a playboy…” the second single off the Tremaine album is decent but nothing groundbreaking, and I still haven’t heard much from the reality show it coincides with.
