Her Too (7.5/10)

TDE’s newest member and California native SiR must have some good harmonies and melodies flowing through his veins, considering he comes from a family of music where his father was a church singer, his uncle was a bassist for Prince, and his two brothers are songwriters - one of whom wrote a hit for Jaheim back in 2007 that inspired Sir Darryl Farris to dedicate his own life to music. Soon after SiR had a monumental opportunity to produce for Anita Baker, where during their studio session she convinced him to take his career further, and before long he was the official male singer of the legendary Top Dawg Entertainment.

With that being said there’s certainly high expectations for TDE artists, expectations that were recently met by their female lead in SZA, who dropped her debut project a few weeks ago to spectacular reviews and for good reason. A few months before however SiR had already released a 6 track EP titled Her Too, and for the most part it leaves a feeling of optimism for what’s soon to come.

Her Too is critiqued track by track below:

New LA ft Anderson Paak & King Mez

“Well tonight she got her eyes on me… she know I like what I see” Produced by Seige Monstracity the first record is easily one of the standouts, and that’s by no surprise considering the artists who are featured. This one is pure flames up and down.

The Canvas

“I'm just here to add a little color to the canvas, baby red is for the heart (aye), I'm just here to add a little color to the canvas, your eyes a crazy shade of blue (aye), I'm just here to add a little color to the canvas, can't ever make another you (aye), I'm just here to add a little color to the canvas” Produced by D.K. The Punisher this hook is super fire and this another one of the highlights off the tape.

Don’t Call My Phone

“Don't call my phone no more… I ain't picking up” Album filler… SKIP!

Ooh Nah Nah ft Masego

“Your heartbeat woke me up this morning, still got the taste of you on the tip of my tongue, so beautiful when you're sleeping, may fall in love again if I stay too long” Produced by Andre Harris & D.K. The Punisher this one has a great melody along with great songwriting and I could definitely recommend it. Very strong album cut.

SUGAR

“Maybe I'm crazy, maybe I'm out of my caramel mind, but do you hear what she saying? she wanna be my dinner by candlelight” Produced by J.LBS on it’s best day this is that D’Angelo Brown Sugar sound and on any day that’s more 🔥🔥🔥

W$ Boi

“Real love is dangerous, but I never cared when it came to us… she was an angel” Not a standout but a decent outro all the same, arguable filler but I’m not mad at it

Considering he’s clearly got the talent, the family lineage, and is an Inglewood native, SiR seems to be a perfect fit for TDE and this was a very good 6 track EP to get it started. I look forward to the Kendrick, SchoolBoy, and Ab-Soul collaborations in the future, and if the next project is anything as good as Love Galore then TDE will soon have another classic for their catalogue.
