Diana Ross & The Supremes - For Once in My Life


“For once in my life I have someone who needs me/ someone I've needed so long” Originally written by Ron Miller and Orlando Murden for Motown back in 1965, the most popular version of the ballad was released in 1967 by Stevie Wonder, yet prior to that, there were also renditions by the Four Tops, the Temptations, Tony Bennett, and Diana Ross, the latter of whom’s version was officially released on Motown Unreleased 1969.

 

The Temptations - Why (Must We Fall in Love)


“Why must we fall in love to find out how to cry? Build up trust, then tear it down, oh tell me why/ when it takes so long to make it/ and no time at all to break it off” Originally released in 1969 on The Temptations and the Supremes Together album, this is an unreleased version made up entirely of The Temptations.

 

Ivy Jo - Yesterday’s Dreams


“Yesterday's dreams today are sorrow/ just like your love, girl, fading away/ yesterday's love won't last till tomorrow/ I know you're leaving, but what can I say?” Originally sung by Levi Stubbs and The Four Tops, here is a rendition from Ivy Jo Hunter, who penned a slew of Motown hits for acts like The Spinners, The Temptations, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Marvin Gaye, yet his debut album set for 1970 titled Ivy Jo is in this Bag, was ultimately shelved and never released.

 

The Volumes - One Lucky Day I Found You


“This misery in me I couldn’t erase, until one lucky day I found you…” Remembered as one-hit wonders for their 1962 single “I Love You,” this went unreleased in 1969 yet a rendition sung by David Ruffin of the Temptations was recorded in 1971 and released in 2006 on The Great David Ruffin: The Motown Solo Albums, Vol. 2.

 

Stevie Wonder - Start Out A New Day


“You are my life, my only vice/ they say go on, I can’t be strong/ my pride is gone I’ll never leave you” An unreleased Stevie Wonder track that I wasn’t able to source elsewhere in the extensive Motown catalog.
